White Porcelain Betrothal Plate with Bohemian Floral Pattern

This amazing white porcelain plate features the Hebrew phrase “Mazel Tov” in the center in blue Hebrew letters and is surrounded by a red and green floral pattern. The outer rim features blue leaves of groups of four and the entire item has a Bohemian design that dates to 19th century Germany and Austria. This item is an excellent gift for any occasion!

The Seudat Qnas, a traditional meal eaten marking the betrothal of a Jewish couple, is known today as a “Vort” in Yiddish. A plate was broken at the end of the meal to drive away evil spirits but also to enforce the legal conditions (Tena’im) associated with formal betrothal. This plate is modeled after a design common in Germany and Austria and was glazed and painted.

This plate comes with a certificate from the Israel Museum as well as a small pamphlet with background information in Hebrew and English.
