Cups & Sets Guide

A Jewish home has a lively kitchen, whether it is Bubbe's chicken soup brewing for Shabbat dinner or sizzling latkes for Hanukkah. Jewish holidays involve their own traditional foods. The most frequent Jewish holiday is Shabbat, which occurs on a weekly basis. Shabbat is the Jewish day of rest, a period of reflection and communal gatherings. The Jewish community gathers to pray together and of course, eat together! Shabbat includes three featured meals: the Friday night dinner, Saturday afternoon lunch and Saturday evening 'third meal.' It is customary to have friends, family, and other guests over for these festive meals. Therefore, the proper kitchen supplies, tableware, and cups and sets are crucial for honoring these Jewish traditions.

About Cups & Sets

What does the cups and sets category entail? Judaica cups and sets include Jewish ritual items as well as tableware for hosting guests for Jewish events and holiday dinners. Ritual cups include Kiddush cups, Kiddush fountains, and washing cups. Kiddush cups are ritual items for reciting the Kiddush blessing before the meal on Shabbat and Jewish holidays. Kiddush fountains allow you to easily share the Kiddush wine with all the guests at your table through a fountain pouring method. Washing cups are cups used for a ritual washing of the hands before eating. A featured Judaica set is a wine set for the storage of your Shabbat wine.

Other ritual Judaica cups include Mayim Achronim for hand washing and Elijah and Miriam cups for the Passover Seder. Cups and sets are important items for the celebration of Shabbat and other Jewish holidays.

Materials

Cups can be made from a variety of materials, depending on the usage of the cup and the style. High end Kiddush cups can be made of sterling silver material. Other Kiddush cups are made from metal, pewter, and wood. Washing cups for daily use are usually made of plastic but cups for Shabbat are made of metal and sterling silver. High quality Kiddush fountains are made from 925 sterling silver and tend to be a bit pricier.

Decorations

Ritual Judaica cup decorations can range from classic sterling silver to elaborate detailing. Shabbat cups may have the Kiddush blessing written on them, 'Bore Pri Hagofen.' These cups are often decorated with Jewish symbols such as the pomegranate or images of Jerusalem. Washing cups often have floral designs and Jerusalem scenes. Many cup designs feature engravings and details on the border of the cup. Some Kiddush cup designs feature the classic stem goblet style, while more modern cups do not have a stand and rest on the table.
