  The reason that the IDF didn’t have adequate intelligence regarding the ambush on the Marmara is that Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan and the Turkish security services relayed to the Israeli intelligence services that only peace activists would be on the flotilla and that violence was not to be expected. All this was said in the framework of diplomatic efforts just before the flotilla disembarked. There are protocols documenting this. For this reason, the intelligence estimate was that in all probability, the Israeli marines would not encounter resistance like they did, in fact, encounter.

  On its homepage, the Times emphasized the online war between Israel and the “peace activists” over the version of events. At least two videos on the Navy Seals activity on the flotilla released by the IDF have received more than a million views on YouTube. Videos released by the IDF have been fighting head to head against those released by Pro Palestinian groups for the last 48 hours.

  In the background of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s trip to the United States and admittedly tense meeting with US President Barack Obama, backdoor procedural Likud politics were taking place. As noted earlier regarding Netanyahu’s internal Likud troubles, the Prime Minister had requested that internal Likud elections for the party’s Central Committee and local branches be delayed by 2 years since the party’s current membership is too right wing.   The last two days has seen the fastest restart and re-stop to the Middle East Peace Process since it started in 1993. For a period of 36 hours, the world was expecting the process to be jump started by what the Obama Administration termed “proximity talks”. These were touted as indirect talks, brokered by a US middleman, that could possibly get Israel and the Palestinians cozied up to each other just enough to talk about something involving a state. Mahmoud Abbas, under terrible US pressure, was forced to agree to talking, even though his official term as Palestinian Authority chairman officially ran out in February and he is no longer an actual elected leader.

  Bibi Netanyahu may soon lose control of his own Likud party. On September 8th of last year on the front page of Israel’s Ma’ariv newspaper, it was reported that Netanyahu’s close associates were trying to get rid of a certain internal Likud statute that requires voters to amass 16 months of party membership before they can vote for the party’s institutions. The reason was simple. Internal party elections were coming up, and Netanyahu did not have enough supporters to put his men in the party’s central committee. That means his internal party rivals led by Moshe Feiglin among others, could take control. “If they succeed,” said one of his associates, “the pressure on Knesset members will be enormous. Everybody starts thinking about his own primary campaign, and Netanyahu starts to lose control of the faction.” (Ma’ariv, September 8, front page)
