This morning, a car bombing in New Delhi outside the Israeli embassy injured two, one of which may have been the wife of an Israeli diplomat.

According to Indian news outlets and the Foreign Ministry, the explosion destroyed an Israeli diplomatic vehicle and injured two.  Reports also said the explosion took place not far from Indian Prime Minister Manmohan’s official residence in New Delhi.  Indian police spokespeople said the car in question was a minivan with blue plates that had its windows and rear doot blown out.  Witnesses said they saw a motorbike following the car and the rider throw an object at the car just before the explosion.  However, the Indian police is also operating under the assumption that someone placed an explosive beneath the car.

Television footage from the scene showed an injured woman, who is assumed to be the wife of an Israeli diplomat who was on her way back from taking her children to daycare.  The other injured person was identified as the driver.  The Israeli Foreign Ministry has not elaborated on the extent of the woman’s injuries and has not released the identities of the injured, only saying that she was taken to a medical center and released and that “cooperation with local security forces is excellent”.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack but Israel and India suspect that Iran and Hezbollah are behind the explosion, especially since Hezbollah marked the assassination of Imad Mughniyeh, one of the organization’s commanders two days ago and has vowed to avenge his death on numerous occasions.

According to Israeli outlets, security teams are currently under orders from the Shin Bet to boost security at all Israeli embassies and missions around the world.  The Shin Bet has been assessing the situation has considered sending additional guards around the world to protect Israeli missions.

Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman issued a statement in response to the attack, saying that Israel will not bow to terror and that such actions show that Israel “faces terror inside and outside Israel”.
