Israeli President Shimon Peres appeared on “The View” this week during his visit to Washington DC and New York and was interviewed by Barbara Walters.
During the live broadcast interview on Wednesday, Walters interviewed Peres about Israel’s plans regarding the Iranian nuclear program and asked about Israel’s nuclear arms, which Israel has neither confirmed or denied. Peres was evasive during the interview, but said that Israel and the US agree that a nuclear-armed Iran is a dangerous situation for the entire Middle East and that Israel would not be the first to use nuclear weapons in a war.
Peres also said during the interview that Israel threatens no one and that the true threat is Iran, whose president has threatened to wipe out Israel more than once. He also said that Israel and the US are in agreement that Iran must not be allowed to have a nuclear option.
Walters also asked about Peres’ reaction to the claim that US President Barack Obama is not as Pro-Israel as his predecessors. Peres answered that one only needs to look at Obama’s record to see that the claim is false, considering the close relations between Israel and the US and the joint collaboration on security issues. Peres and Obama are supposed to meet on Sunday about Iran, the current sanctions in place and the military option which Israel has announced over the last few months that it is considering.
However, the interview was not limited to serious issues. Walters asked Shimon Peres about his being on Facebook and if he was comfortable being surrounded by women. Peres’ responses of “being quite comfortable” and asking the audience to be his friends drew a few laughs. Peres also said that peace is always possible, especially on the internet where it is possible to be friends with people from different countries and cultures.
The interview closed with Walters saying that both her and Peres are over 80 and are close friends which was then followed by a hug and kiss. The video of the interview can be seen below.
