Jewelry By Occasion Guide

Judaism is a religion that celebrates a full calendar year of Jewish holidays and life cycle events. These joyous occasions are honored with traditions, rituals, and communal gatherings. Some say that Jews cannot celebrate Simchas alone, because according to Jewish law and tradition there is always community involvement. Two major Simchas include entrance into adulthood and marriage.

It is customary to bring gifts to these Jewish celebrations. A wonderful gift is jewelry for the young boy, girl, or married couple. Three types of jewelry include Bar Mitzvah jewelry, Bat Mitzvah jewelry, and wedding jewelry.

Bar Mitzvah Jewelry

When a boy turns thirteen, he is considered an adult according to Jewish law, and is thus required to observe the mitzvot (or Jewish commandments). As a way of marking this entrance into adulthood, it customary to call the young man to read from the Torah for the first time as an adult member of the community.

The boy's thirteenth birthday is an exciting occasion celebrated by family and friends. It is a common American practice to continue this celebration with a dinner or party to honor the Bar Mitzvah boy. Guests are expected to bring presents, such as Bar Mitzvah jewelry.

Bar Mitzvah jewelry can include necklaces and rings. For boys, plain silver chain necklaces are always received well. A newer style is a disk on key attached to a chain to wear as a necklace while easily transporting a USB flash drive.
