Ceramic Rosh Hashanah Plate with Hebrew Text and Dutch Delft Design

This ceramic Rosh Hashanah plate features a blue and white paint and glaze design that was created in Delft, Holland in the 17th Century and is an imitation of similar colored pieces that came from China. The center of the plate features the Hebrew words “Chatima Tova” that means “Sealed for the Good” in English and is surrounded by a blue floral design that includes leaves and flowers and is accented by blue birds.

On Rosh Hashanah there are special foods that are eaten because their names can be interpreted to be a blessing for the New Year. Those foods are occasionally eaten off of a plate similar to this one. When they are eaten, a short prayer is recited.

This plate comes with a certificate from the Israel Museum as well as a small pamphlet with background information in Hebrew and English.
